Artikel vorgestellten Bonus-Zertifikat

PERTH, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Anglo American Metallurgical Coal said on Thursday it has declared force majeure on its coal mines in Australia's Queensland state due to prolonged and heavy rains in the region.

The mines affected are Callide, Dawson, Foxleigh, German Creek and Moranbah North, the company said in a statement.

Anglo American is the second-largest exporter of metallurgical coal in Australia and owns two thermal coal mines.

Bloomberg reported that Anglo American Plc has little reason to separate its South African and international operations, as mooted by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Mr Henk Groenewald who co manages Coronation Fund Managers Limited’s resources fund said that “If you break it up, there may be a short term rerating, but it won’t do anything for Anglo in the long term. The long term value in Anglo is the cash flow in the future.”

BofA Merrill Lynch this week indicated Anglo may be wise to carve up its business, removing the effect of negative South African issues on the value of its international assets. Those issues include black empowerment requirements and chronic power shortages. The recent award of prospecting rights at Kumba Iron Ore Limited’s Sishen mine to a company that appears to be politically connected also signals the local environment is getting worse.

BofA said that Anglo’s international unit, potentially including its Chilean copper assets, Colombian and Australian coal and Brazilian iron ore may be valued at about USD 34 billion. The South African business could be worth USD 30 billion and include Anglo Platinum Limited and Kumba Iron Ore.

Anglo American announces sale of Zinc portfolio to Vedanta for $1,338 million

Anglo American plc (“Anglo American”) announces that it has agreed to sell its portfolio of zinc assets (“Anglo American Zinc”) to Vedanta Resources plc ("Vedanta") for a total consideration of $1,338 million on an attributable, debt and cash free basis.

Anglo American Zinc comprises the Skorpion mine in Namibia, the Lisheen mine in Ireland and a 74% interest in Black Mountain Mining in South Africa, which holds 100% of the Black Mountain mine and the Gamsberg project. Of the total consideration, $698 million relates to the Skorpion mine, $308 million relates to the Lisheen mine and $332 million relates to Anglo American's 74% interest in Black Mountain Mining.

The sale of Anglo American Zinc follows Anglo American's October 2009 announcement of its strategy to focus on its portfolio of world class, large scale, long life mining assets in those commodities where Anglo American holds advantaged positions.

Cynthia Carroll, Chief Executive of Anglo American, said: "The successful sale of Anglo American Zinc for $1,338 million following our announcement in October last year is testament to the high quality of the business and its management team. This agreement represents an important milestone in our strategy to focus on our core commodity businesses and on the delivery of our exciting near term growth from our $17 billion of approved projects. I am grateful for the support received from Anglo American Zinc's management and employees and I believe they will benefit under the ownership, and with the development plans, of Vedanta."

Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta, said: "We are delighted to have reached this agreement with Anglo American to acquire their portfolio of zinc assets. These high quality assets complement Vedanta's existing portfolio, creating the largest zinc and
lead producer in the world. We intend to rapidly develop Gamsberg, one of the largest high quality zinc projects in the world, leveraging our world-class large project development expertise. Vedanta has consistently demonstrated a track record of
successfully integrating and investing in its acquisitions, and we look forward to working with the high quality management team and employees of Anglo American Zinc, Exxaro and the local communities towards growing the business. We are committed, as we are throughout all of our operations world wide, to maintaining the highest health and safety standards, and to the sustainable development of these operations."

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals as well as competition clearance in the relevant jurisdictions. In addition, Exxaro Resources Limited (“Exxaro”), Anglo American's black economic empowerment partner in Black Mountain Mining, holds a 26% interest in the company and has a pre-emptive right to match Vedanta's offer in respect of this asset. Completion of the transaction is expected to be in stages, with separate completion dates for Skorpion, Lisheen and Black Mountain Mining.

Request for 300 MW power proposal possible this year - Anglo American Coal

      By: Martin Creamer

      Updated 34 minutes ago

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – A request for a proposal for the building of a 300-MW power plant using discard Anglo coal may be invited this year or early next, Anglo American Thermal Coal CEO Norman Mbazima said on Monday.

Mbazima told Mining Weekly Online that, while Anglo had no intention to enter the business of power generation, security of supply of electricity was crucial to the company, which had prompted it to appoint consultant Mott MacDonald to deal with the plan to self-generate.

He said that part of the plan was for an independent power producer (IPP) to own the power plant and for Anglo to enter into a power purchase agreement with the IPP, which would also make use of Anglo's discard coal.

Given the phased increases in electricity prices over the next three years Mbazima expected Anglo to be able to produce the electricity cheaper than the price at which Eskom would be selling it.

He said that Eskom had responded positively to the Anglo plan to generate its own power and that the contribution of Anglo was likely to be included in South Africa's proposed integrated resource plan.

Anglo would also have to feed into the transmission grid currently owned and operated by Eskom and would have to agree commercial terms with Eskom.

A location had not yet been decided for the proposed plant, but some envisage it being located between Anglo's Kleinkopje and Greenside collieries.

A modular approach is likely, which could result in possibly three 300-MW power plants being built.

Mining Weekly Online learns that Xstrata Coal is also planning a 600-MW self-generation plant nearby and that the two companies, which have a joint venture in Colombia, way work together on the self-generation of electricity.
